Sustainable use of aluminium starts with design. By developing materials that are designed for recycling from the very beginning, we maximize their reuse potential – beverage cans, car bodies, license plates or coffee capsules. In 2011, Novelis made a bold decision to focus entirely on aluminium recycling. Today, we are the world’s largest recycler of aluminium.

Recycling as a Mission

Our mission is clear: we develop innovative recycling solutions and create products with our partners that are lighter and infinitely recyclable. With an average recycling content of 63% in our products today, we’ve built a solid foundation. Our goal is to raise this to 75% by 2030. For comparison, the global aluminium recycling rate is around 32%, and for consumer goods in general, it’s a mere 9%.

Recycling-Friendly Design

Recycling-friendly design ensures that aluminium scrap can be separated cleanly, reducing the need for new raw materials and lowering the carbon footprint. We optimize alloys and increasingly use low-carbon aluminium with high recycled content to promote sustainability and efficiency alike.

It’s about designing products in a way that allows materials to be easily separated and efficiently recycled at the end of their lifecycle. This approach is especially critical in the automotive industry, where vehicles are made from a complex mix of aluminium, steel, and plastics.
