Novelis and Jaguar Land Rover: Pioneers in Aluminium Recycling
Europe’s First Closed Aluminium Recycling Loop
In 2008, Novelis and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) set a milestone for sustainability in the automotive industry with the REALCAR project. This collaboration resulted in Europe’s first closed-loop aluminium recycling system. Aluminium scrap from vehicle production is collected, recycled by Novelis, and reused in new car bodies. This reduces the need for primary aluminium, lowers energy consumption, and cuts CO₂ emissions – a major step toward a circular economy.
For this groundbreaking closed-loop recycling system, Novelis and JLR were honored with the European Aluminium Award in 2017. This recognition highlights how innovation and collaboration can transform industries and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Recycling Innovation in All JLR Models Today
In addition to introducing this innovative process, the project also led to the development of a new aluminium alloy designed specifically to include a higher proportion of recycled content without compromising the quality or mechanical properties of automotive sheets. The Novelis Advanz™ 5F-s5754 RC alloy was first used in the Jaguar XE and is now featured in all Jaguar Land Rover models. This alloy can be made entirely from recycled material, supporting the automotive industry on its journey toward a circular future.
